Time & Place:
Wednesday evening June 18 through Friday June 20 at noon
St. Louis Airport Hilton.

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO REGISTER TODAY !

The meeting is Open Invitation to Public & Private Breeders, Genomicists, Physiologists, and Pathologists.

However, space is limited. Registration will be accepted on a 'first come, first serve' basis.

Please download and fill out the registration form today and EMAIL or FAX to Ann Chase with USB (achase@smithbucklin.com)
USB has provided funds to cover most meals and meeting rooms (you will cover travel and hotel sleeping room). Special hotel rates are available through registration with Ann until May 20 or until registration is closed out.

ABOUT THE MEETING
This meeting is a follow up to the 'town hall' meeting about the future of soybean breeding that was held at the Soybean Breeders' Workshop in February.

As you know, soybean breeding faces critical challenges ahead. Shortages of soybean breeders are predicted, adapting molecular technology for field breeding is complex, establishing good public-private collaborations is in the experimental stage, and even maintaining public breeding programs is questionable. What should public soybean breeders be doing?

The questions facing us are many. Please come join your colleagues and help forge the way ahead in soybean breeding. We need your ideas and participation! The program will be interesting. We are scheduling large blocks of time for discussion. The objective of this meeting is to develop a Soybean Breeding Strategic Plan to share with public and private administrators to influence hiring and funding priorities.

So, please register now and put the meeting on your calendar! See you there!

Details of the program will follow in a few weeks.

Lastly, this meeting directly follows the national plant breeder meeting in Des Moines. We will have a report on the national meeting at our soybean meeting

Sincerely,

The Executive Committee for the meeting:
  Brian Diers
  Jim Orf
  Clem Weidenbenner
  Perry Cregan
  Roger Boerma

7/24/06 Soy genome sequencing underway by DOE Joint Genome Institute, with USDA and NSF
7/24/06 The Department of Energy, Joint Genome Institute, is undertaking the whole-genome shotgun sequencing of the soybean genome (cv Williams 82). Infrastructure for the project is supported by NSF, USDA-ARS, and United Soybean Board grants. The project will also sequence up to 500 BACs from Williams 82 libraries, identified by members of the research community. A website has has been developed to allow the submission of BAC sequencing resquests.

The Crop Science Society of America has launched The Plant Genome, a new quarterly publication of its flagship journal, Crop Science. The Goal of the Jounal is to provide an outlet for the publication of applied plant-genomics restarch, a short submission to print timeline, and the readership with the latest original research in the application of genomics to crop improvement. Manuscripts to be considered for publication in the Plant Genome can be submitted to the founding Technical Editor Dr. Randy Shoemaker through the Crop Science submissions site. More information about The Plant Genome is avalible.
